Rug Description
Extra Fine Mashhad, Eastern Persia, circa 1920: a monumental masterpiece of rare commission, blending literature and myth. This extraordinary Mashhad is more than just a rug; it is a textile epic of inestimable value. The city of Mashhad, the capital of Khorassan, has historically been the spiritual and cultural heart of Eastern Persia, renowned for its excellent manufacturing since the Safavid era. However, it is extremely rare to find Mashhad specimens with a silk warp: this technique was strictly reserved for high-level aristocratic commissions or state gifts, as silk allows for an incredibly high knot density and “extra fine” detail definition that is impossible to achieve with a cotton structure.
The decorative layout is breathtaking: from the center of a finely chiseled medallion, a universe of details unfolds. The field hosts spectacular hunting scenes (Shikargah), most notably the dramatic realism of a lion gripping its prey, surrounded by colorful birds and wildlife that bring the Garden of Eden to life. Every figure is defined with surgical precision, making the animals’ muscles and the birds’ plumage appear to vibrate.
The elegance is enhanced by main borders on a white ground, housing majestic Shah Abbas palmettes and Herati motifs. The final touch of scholarship is found in the minor borders, where cartouches with Persian poetic verses run along a midnight-blue ground, transforming the artifact into a bridge between visual art and literary culture.
