Rug Description
Figurative Sarouk Farahan, Central Persia, circa 1890: a narrative masterpiece blending epic myth and textile artistry. This exceptional Sarouk Farahan is one of the rarest and most sophisticated expressions of Persian figurative weaving. More than a rug, it is a visual retelling of the legend of Bahram and Gol-Andam, a timeless tale of love and adventure from the Persian epic tradition. Prince Bahram, the legendary hunter, is depicted with his beloved Gol-Andam (whose name translates to “Flower-like Body”) in a courtly garden rich with symbols of nobility and spiritual devotion.
The central field is a triumph of calligraphic precision: human figures are immersed in a lush garden, surrounded by stylized architecture and vibrant flora that seems to mirror the emotions of the lovers. The chromatic palette features the most prestigious Farahan dyes—deep reds, powder blues, and ivory accents—providing the scene with a painterly depth and dimensionality.
The true magnetic center of the rug is the main border on a midnight-blue ground. Here, decorative rigor gives way to a vibrant, living narrative: amidst flowering branches and palmettes, a masterful rhythm unfolds, punctuated by felines and birds captured in powerful, plastic poses. The felines, rendered with a sinuous and muscular grace, seem to prowl through the vegetation, while the birds provide a lyrical counterpoint of lightness. This interplay creates an almost hypnotic visual dynamism, where the sharp contrast between the deep blue field and the warm tones of the animals enhances the three-dimensionality of the design.
Condition: Excellent. The clarity of the faces and the integrity of the pile testify to the museum-quality nature of this piece, meticulously preserved at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
