Rug Description

This stunning antique Tibetan rug features a bold red field adorned with three large circular medallions, symbolizing wholeness and harmony, surrounded by a rhythmic arrangement of floral sprays. Likely dating from the early to mid-20th century, this piece reflects both spiritual symbolism and vibrant decorative sensibility typical of Tibetan weaving traditions. The field is framed by a dark navy inner border punctuated by white pearl-like dots, a traditional Tibetan motif signifying spiritual clarity. The outermost meander border is rendered in tones of yellow, ivory, coral, and indigo, forming an important and almost architectural maze pattern that symbolizes eternity and protection. Woven using handspun wool, this rug showcases the Tibetan cut-loop knotting technique, producing a deep, luxurious pile. The saturated red ground, derived from natural mineral or plant-based dyes, is a traditional color in Tibetan rugs, evoking both auspiciousness and vitality. This piece measures 93 x 196 cm in size.
