Rug Description

This vibrant antique Daghestan rug, woven in the Eastern Caucasus and dating to the late 19th century, is an outstanding example of the region’s finely knotted tribal artistry. Distinguished by its rare yellow field, a color seldom found in antique Caucasian rugs, this piece bursts with life and balance through its structured arrangement of geometric motifs. The central field is adorned with repeating stylized medallions, also known as latch-hook or octagram rosettes, rendered in saturated shades of cobalt blue, deep red, ivory, and soft green. These motifs are harmoniously arranged in a tight, grid-like lattice, framed by multiple borders that exemplify Caucasian precision and symmetry. The main border features a dynamic chain of diamond-shaped lozenges, echoing traditional Daghestan iconography, and is flanked by zigzag and running water guard borders. The overall design reflects both the weaver’s aesthetic refinement and the deep tribal symbolism embedded in these regional carpets. The measurement of this piece is 126 x 113 cm in size.
