Rug Description

This finely woven Tibetan rug, measuring 64 × 80 cm, is a compact and elegant example of a traditional meditation seat (dzong or khaden), used in monastic or domestic Buddhist settings during prayer, meditation, or rest. It likely dates to the early to early 20th century. The rug features a repeating pattern of floral medallions interspersed with stylized Shou characters, the Chinese symbol for longevity, woven in bold mustard yellow and deep coral-orange against a rich chocolate brown field. These motifs are not only decorative but carry profound spiritual meaning, reflecting the deep fusion of Tibetan and Chinese symbolism within Himalayan textile arts. Framed with a vibrant red cotton binding, the rug maintains its traditional rectangular format and soft pile, typical of Tibetan weaving made for practical and ceremonial use.
