Rug Description
Antique Chinese Peking rug, late 19th century: imperial majesty and symbolic dynamism. A rare and evocative example of Peking craftsmanship, hand-knotted during the final decades of the 19th century. This rug is a monumental masterpiece of Asian figurative art, celebrating the famous theme of the “Eight Horses of King Mu” (Ba Jun Tu). The composition, spread across a generous surface, portrays the steeds in various dynamic poses — galloping, grazing, or resting — within a stylized landscape that evokes peace and nobility. In Chinese culture, the eight horses are a powerful omen of success, perseverance, and social advancement.
The wool quality is superb: high-grade, lustrous, and full-bodied wool, featuring the typical high and compact pile of Peking rugs that provides a pleasant tactile sensation and exceptional durability. The chromatic palette is of absolute refinement, centered around the iconic “Peking Blue” and indigo tones that stand out vividly against a cream-ivory background. Subtle touches of ochre and shades of beige define the horse figures and naturalistic elements with extreme precision, creating a sober, elegant, and perfectly balanced contrast. The minimalist main border frames the scene like a grand silk painting.
Condition: Excellent. A piece of rare historical integrity, meticulously preserved at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
