Rug Description

Antique Quchan rug horse cover, Khorasan tribal manufacture, late 19th century: a masterpiece of equestrian textile art. A rare and charismatic example of a “Juls” (horse cover), hand-knotted by the Kurdish tribes of the Quchan region in Northeast Persia during the late 19th century. This artifact is more than just a rug; it is a symbol of prestige and status within nomadic culture. Its specific shape and vibrant design bear witness to the profound importance of the horse in the life and ceremonies of the Khorasan tribes. The field is adorned with geometric patterns and protective symbols reflecting a millenary tradition.

The wool quality is superb: hand-spun local wool with a high lanolin content, providing the piece with extraordinary luster and a legendary durability. The chromatic palette is deep and authentic, dominated by an intense garnet red achieved from natural dyes, harmonized with midnight blue and accents of ivory and burnt sienna that highlight the intricate tribal motifs.

Condition: Excellent. Despite its original functional use, the piece shows extraordinary preservation, meticulously cared for within the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.

Dimensions: Approximately 106 × 107 cm. A classic square format typical of period horse covers, ideal for display as a wall hanging, framed as an artwork, or placed in intimate spaces seeking a piece with great historical character.
