Rug Description

Antique Bakshaish rug, Persian Azerbaijan manufacture, late 19th century: geometric power and rarity in a square format. An extraordinary Bakshaish specimen, hand-knotted at the end of the 19th century, striking for its incredibly defined visual impact and monumental graphic strength. This rug serves as a rare stylistic “missing link” between Persian and Caucasian traditions: its three large central medallions feature a complex geometric structure, with stepped outlines and internal hooks that recall the designs of the famous Karadaj and Garage rugs, yet interpreted with the typical expressive freedom of Bakshaish production.

The chromatic palette is the most captivating element: the field is dominated by a deep, magnetic midnight blue, making the ivory, light blue, and ochre-decorated medallions stand out with extreme clarity. The main border, in a warm and vibrant brick-red tone, frames the central field, creating a noble and highly distinctive chromatic contrast. The wool quality is superb: high-resilience local wools that have allowed for extraordinary preservation of the pile and a near-calligraphic definition of the tribal motifs and geometric symbols within the medallions.

The square format (150 × 149 cm) is an absolute exception for this manufacture, typically dedicated to large-scale carpets; this peculiarity makes it a piece of significant collector interest.
