Rug Description

Antique Kuba rug, East Caucasian manufacture, late 19th century: a masterpiece of chromatic contrast and archaic symbolism. An extraordinary specimen of Caucasian textile art, hand-knotted in the famous Kuba region during the final decades of the 19th century. The most striking and rare feature of this rug is its stunning mustard-yellow background, an exceptionally saturated and vibrant hue that lends the artifact an uncommon visual energy. Over this bold chromatic base lies a complex serrated lattice or diamond-shaped field, filled with stylized floral motifs and talismanic symbols, reflecting the rich tribal heritage of the Eastern Caucasus.

The chromatic palette is further enhanced by a rare shade of blue in the main border, creating a magnetic contrast with both the mustard field and the dark tones of the outer border. The latter displays typical oxidation from iron-based pigments (“corrosive black”), an unmistakable hallmark of antiquity and authentic vegetable dyeing processes. To preserve the integrity of this rare fragment and ensure its optimal presentation, the rug has been professionally mounted on canvas, transforming it into a piece of fine art ready for display.
