Rug Description
Antique Chinese Rug Nichols, Art Deco period: a masterpiece of protective symbolism and imperial splendor. A rare and imposing example of Nichols craftsmanship, hand-knotted in China between 1920 and 1930. This rug stands out for its sober and scholarly majesty, dominated by a golden-yellow background of exceptional brilliance, a hue historically linked to imperial dignity. The composition eschews decorative excess to focus on the power of symbols: at the center of the lower main border, a solitary ideogram stands out, giving the artifact a tone of solemn authenticity and a precise philosophical or dedicatory message.
The most fascinating symbolic apparatus unfolds along the border: at the corners, the Shou symbol (the universal emblem of longevity) is literally protected by stylized bats. In Chinese culture, the bat (“Fu”) is a homophone for “happiness”: their presence at the corners, guarding long life, transforms the rug into a powerful talisman of protection and prosperity for the home. The wool quality is the superior standard typical of Nichols: a high, dense, and lustrous pile that highlights the contrast between the golden field and the deep indigo blue border.
