Rug Description

Antique Persian Baluch Hand-Knotted Rug, 1880-1900 ca. Carpets made by the Baluch are highly prized by collectors of ethnic and tribal art. The Baluch people, an ethnic group present mainly in Afghanistan, also have a significant presence in Iran, especially in Persian Khorassan, on the borders with Afghan and Pakistani territory. Antique Baluch carpets are the subject of research and study by carpet enthusiasts and collectors as well as by ethnologists and anthropologists. In this artifact on a camel-colored background, we find a new interpretation of the styles and decorative patterns of Baluch carpets. The colors of this carpet are limited, like their Turkmen cousins, but well-modulated and contrasted with each other. The background is dominated by tribal “animal tree” and vine shoot motifs, “Hashie watermelons”, interspersed with 2 large rosettes. The main border is composed of small hooked lozenges (often considered stylized tarantulas) set with reciprocal and mirrored geometric motifs. Other small borders frame the camel-colored field, offering dynamism to the modularity of the design. The wools are among the softest, like those we can appreciate among the highest quality carpets. The state of conservation is excellent. Explore our collection of antique persian rugs.
