Rug Description

Persian Bakshaish Antique Runner, ca 1880-1900. A wonderful antique Bakhshaish runner of fine quality. Generally, runner rugs are thought to be of lower quality or importance than rugs of other sizes. The complexity of the workmanship and above all the choice of proportions between the width of the borders or the spaciousness of the background are elements that should not be overlooked for a good visual, graphic and chromatic rendering of the carpet as a whole. Certainly, before the carpet models were drawn on paper, the compositional work of a design and the various dimensional and chromatic relationships had to be elaborated through imagination and experience which continue to give us emotions when we find ourselves admiring an antique Bakhshaish carpet like this one presented in the Mollaianrugs collection. The camel-colored background gives brightness and a refined contrast with the five medallions that follow one another on the background. The medallions are very delicate and interesting and have been knotted in different decorative styles at the weaver’s discretion. The large leaves on the bottom, like the rosettes and other traditional motifs, help to relax the gaze, allowing the entire decorative structure to be seen clearly and vivid. In this antique Bakhshaish carpet, we can also appreciate the spacious border on a brick red background, decorated with important vine leaf motifs. All the colors are well modulated with each other maintaining a truly surprising balance. The state of conservation is excellent. This antique Bakhshaish carpet can be placed in both a classic and modern environment, always enhancing the surrounding rooms and furnishings.
