Rug Description

Antique Hand-knotted Caucasian Red Shirvan Rug, 1940 ca.

A classic example of how a carpet knotted in the 1940s is always attractive and fascinating. In this carpet with octagonal medallions, we can find some similitudes with the octagonal shape of Turkmen gul, containing in each medallion a colorful eight-pointed star in the center. Present in the borders of the medallions and of the carpet are clear references to the Caucasian Shirvan Tahkte carpets in the ram’s horn motif which in the main border is repeated in an alternate contrasting position to create a stylization of the symbol of birth. The chromatic alternation of yellow and green tones stand out, giving liveliness to the carpet, making it “lighter” compared to the rigidity of the design. In excellent condition, this Shirvan carpet can be placed in any context.  Explore our collection of antique caucasian rugs.
