Rug Description

Antique Persian Farahan Rug , ca 1880. Rare small antique Persian Ferahan carpet. The carpets coming from Ferahan, especially the older ones, are always of rather canonical dimensions, ranging from small-medium format to large format. Small antique Ferahan carpets like this example are decidedly rare. Probably, as in this singular case, this small antique Farahan carpet was created as a definitive sample for the creation of a larger carpet.  As unlike the Vaghireh, this one has the entire decorative composition defined by order of colors, central medallion style, counter edges and borders defined and completed. An imposing central medallion in bright red, filled with herati motifs, dominates the background on ivory. The pendants are very prominent, almost touching the edges of the carpet.   The sky blue corners are filled with floral motifs and lanceolate leaves on the profiles, giving a further chromatic contrast on the background. The two secondary borders bear the motif of bundles of clouds joined by small rosettes. The central border, slightly wider than the secondary ones, on a blue background, bears multi-colored floral motifs that rotate sinuously around the entire perimeter.
