Rug Description

Antique Persian Afshari Rug, 1880-1900 ca.

A real rarity among the carpets made by the Afshari ethnic group. This example still retains part of the kilim headboards, decorated in simple brick red and petrol green stripes. The borders are very fine and rich in decorative elements, from the small zigzag lines to the stylized herati motif on an ivory background, up to the conjunctions of the “animal head” motif. Colors and contrasts follow one another and alternate with liveliness and harmony throughout the entire portion that includes the borders. The field, on a midnight blue background, is dominated by polychrome motifs in alternating positions and colours. The filling motif may be associated for some with the “eagle’s beak” motif often proposed in the Caucasian productions of Dagestan from which the Afshar originate, but also a stylization of the dragon motif which we can also find in the “moharramat” style in the carpets of Krabagh. The pattern of the background is decidedly rare to find in this technical-qualitative combination both for the wools and for the masterfully combined tones.
