Textile Description
Antique Indian Textile with Paisley and Peacock Motifs – Circa 1880
This exquisite antique Indian textile, dating to around late 18th century, is a masterful example of late 19th-century Indian craftsmanship, likely originating from the Kashmir or Punjab regions, where shawl weaving and intricate embroidery reached their peak artistic refinement. Woven in fine wool or pashmina, this rectangular textile is adorned with a rich all-over pattern of paisley motifs, scrolling vines, and delicate floral elements, rendered in vibrant tones of deep crimson, indigo, ivory, and soft ochre. The centerpiece features a rare and elegant composition of four peacocks, symmetrically placed in opposing corners around a blank central field, evoking a sense of sacred geometry and royal symbolism. The surrounding borders are filled with densely packed boteh (paisley) designs, each uniquely detailed and curved in the traditional Kashmiri style, symbolic of fertility and eternity. The field and borders are framed by alternating guard bands featuring floral arabesques and scrolling tendrils, creating a rhythmic, almost architectural visual balance. So, apart from what is visible on the presented photos, it should be noted that the rugs are professionally cleaned, and where necessary, the Selvages/Sides and Ends/Fringes have been secured. Upon request, we can provide a complete condition report (including any retouch performed by our restoration team), if it is not already presented down below.
