Rug Description
This impressive vintage Turkmen rug, measuring 292 × 220 cm, is a stunning example of Central Asian tribal weaving, rich in cultural symbolism and exceptional craftsmanship. The field is adorned with an orderly repetition of Tekke göl motifs, arranged in crisp rows that display the weaver’s technical mastery and tribal identity. Each göl — a medallion-like motif traditionally representing strength and lineage — is meticulously hand-knotted using naturally dyed wool in tones of ivory, black, and warm ochre, all set against a deep madder red background. The rug is framed by a complex system of geometric borders featuring diamond, cross-hatch, and zigzag patterns — each with protective and decorative meaning passed down through generations. The top and bottom ends showcase the classic “elem” panel, often interpreted as a stylized garden or symbolic curtain, grounding the piece in its ceremonial origins. Turkmen carpets like this were originally woven for domestic use among nomadic tribes, valued both for their beauty and their practical role in tent life. Today, they’re prized by collectors and designers for their tribal authenticity, dense pile, and deep, resonant color palette. This carpet is in a very good condition with strong structure and beautiful wool luster, making it a timeless statement piece for living rooms, libraries, or galleries.
