Rug Description
This captivating Turkmen Ersari rug, featuring the rare and mesmerizing “Snake Design” motif, is a powerful testament to the creative and symbolic complexity of Central Asian tribal weaving. Measuring generously, this piece is attributed to the Ersari tribes of northern Afghanistan or southeastern Turkmenistan and dates to the 19th. The rug’s entire field is structured around undulating, serpentine bands woven in rhythmic waves, symbolizing water, fertility, or protection — and occasionally interpreted as ancestral energy or spiritual guardianship. These curving forms, woven in natural shades of deep madder red, indigo blue, and burnt orange, are punctuated with totemic tribal symbols, small hooked diamonds, amulets, and flowers, giving the composition a dynamic, almost hypnotic movement. Unlike the more common Tekke or Yomut gul-based designs, the Snake motif is exceedingly rare and represents a specific Ersari sub-tribal identity, making this piece particularly desirable among collectors of ethnographic and symbolic textiles. The borders are decorated with linked medallions and geometric floral guards, creating a visual contrast that frames the motion of the interior. The wool is lustrous and handspun, dyed with vegetal pigments, and the piece retains excellent structural integrity. This is a museum-worthy rug, ideal for collectors, scholars, or anyone passionate about the visual language of nomadic cultures. This piece measures 170 x 378 cm in size.
