Rug Description

This beautiful antique Turkish rug Ghiordes (Gördes) originates from Western Anatolia, Turkey, and dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. Known for their refined structure and spiritual elegance, Ghiordes rugs are celebrated for their harmonious composition and soft yet vibrant color palettes. The central diamond medallion floats in a field of creamy ivory, bordered by a bold angular frame with stepped zigzag motifs, symbolizing protection and sacred boundaries. The surrounding field is richly decorated with stylized botanical elements and floral figures, typical of Ghiordes weavings, which often blend Ottoman influences with local village creativity. Executed in natural vegetable dyes, the palette includes brick red, soft saffron, olive green, and terracotta, beautifully aged into warm, mellow tones. The corner spandrels and triple borders add structure and rhythm to the piece, reflecting the region’s classical rug-making tradition. Ghiordes is especially known for its use of the Turkish (symmetrical) knot, also called the Ghiordes knot, which contributes to the rug’s durability and dense texture. So, apart from what is visible on the presented photos, it should be noted that the rugs are professionally cleaned, and where necessary, the Selvages/Sides and Ends/Fringes have been secured. Upon request, we can provide a complete condition report (including any retouch performed by our restoration team), if it is not already presented down below.
