Rug Description

Antique Chinese Souf with Silk and Metal Thread Hand knotted and woven. Ca. 1880

A Chinese imperial carpet with delicate and harmoniously combined shades. The relief design highlights the three-dimensionality of the decorations on a gold background. The design develops unidirectionally. From below, we find rainbows in shades of grey/blue in which a dragon-headed carp fish stands out on the modularity of the lines. The fish,in Chinese tradition symbolizes prosperity and eminence while the dragon symbolizes the emperor. From this succession of rainbows, a large cloud is born, Ruyi with a long trail that expands upwards in width, holding a Confucian time suspended, also surrounded by other small clouds. The border is finely decorated with grids filled with motifs from the Taoist and Buddhist tradition such as the endless knot. Excellent state of preservation.
