Rug Description

Late Qing dynasty signed Beiging Silk and Metal Carpet, 19Th Century. The dragon motif is certainly among the most desirable among collectors and scholars of oriental carpets and in particular  of Chinese ones. This motif has been represented in multiple styles both in the carpets of the Caucasian area and Persia. In this important example, the 5-clawed dragon motif is present in the center set in a circular polylobed medallion and at the corners within rounded segments. The bases on which the dragons are knotted in high relief are woven in the souf technique with metal threads. The three-dimensional effect is surprising. The background of the lackey orange carpet is filled with lotus flowers, echoing the style of carpets made in the Qangxi era (1662-1722). There are 5 dragons to symbolize the Emperor, the power of nature and the universe. Running along all sides of the rug is a rainbow border pattern with a “sacred mountain” motif in the center of each side. Two yellow lotus flowers stand out on the background, a color associated with the Empire. Excellent state of preservation. Explore our collection of Imperial rugs.
