Rug Description

Antique Chinese Imperial Palace Carpet (Silk & Metal), 1800-1820.

A Chinese imperial carpet knotted in pure silk with flat weave made of metallic threads. The rather large dimensions for a carpet belonging to this very rare group of Chinese imperial carpets are certainly a reason to further appreciate the technical ability and graphic quality of this “jewel” which precisely in the “golden yellow” color identifies its nobility and its very uniqueness. The main border echoes the decorative style of the ancient 17th and 18th century carpets made in the oases of Yarkand and Khotan with the same knotting and weaving technique, with the peach blossom motif to symbolize spring. The pattern of the carpet develops on a reticular structure which also recalls the “chesti” structure present in many Persian carpets such as the Bakhtiari. In this wonderful imperial carpet, the grid that sets the knotted motifs on the wire woven areas is chiseled with small floral motifs in silk. The small medallions present within the plain weave areas carry the double “Ruyi” cloud motif in two colors, creating a sort of small medallion. The open “Ruyi” cloud symbol, unlike the second variant with the trail, is typical of older carpets. Between the main border and the background, runs the pearl border, considered one of the “8 precious things” in Confucianism.  Visit our collection of antique Chinese Imperial Palace rugs.
