Rug Description
Antique Caucasian rug Zeikur, East Caucasian manufacture, late 19th century: decorative elegance and vibrant polychromy. A rare and exceptional Zeikur runner, hand-knotted in the Dagestan region during the final decades of the 19th century. Unlike more common specimens of this type, this rug stands out for its markedly more decorative and fluid style, moving away from the rigidity of the St. Andrew’s cross to present a sequence of rosette medallions and stylized floral motifs of extraordinary refinement. The composition is free and airy, reflecting a sophisticated aesthetic that blends Caucasian tribal strength with a almost pictorial floral sensitivity.
The wool quality is excellent, as typical of the finest local productions: lustrous, hand-spun wool rich in lanolin, providing the pile with a dense texture and a silky handle. The chromatic palette is a true triumph of natural pigments: the deep midnight blue background highlights a rich array of colors, including ruby red, emerald green, saffron yellow, and ivory. The border, which departs from the classic “running dog” motif in favor of more sinuous and floral decorations, harmoniously frames the central field, bestowing a visual balance of rare elegance.
Condition: Excellent. A meticulously preserved specimen held at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery, maintaining the freshness and brilliance of its original dyes.
Dimensions & Interior Design Advice: 287×127 cm. Thanks to its runner format and less austere design, it is the ideal centerpiece for grand hallways, prestigious entryways, or transitional spaces that require a touch of color and history. A true art investment for the collector seeking a Zeikur that breaks from traditional patterns, capable of furnishing with timeless modernity.
