Rug Description

Antique Shirvan rug Chichi, East Caucasian manufacture, circa 1880: a collector’s masterpiece in a rare format. An exceptional example of a Shirvan Chichi, hand-knotted at the end of the 19th century, distinguished by its top-tier graphic and chromatic elegance. The rug immediately stands out due to its unusually long and slender format, a true rarity for this type, which is typically found in smaller or wider dimensions. The midnight blue field is densely and crisply populated with alternating geometric motifs, most notably the iconic eight-pointed stars, ancient symbols of protection and spirituality central to Caucasian tradition.

The true harmonic anchor of the rug is the masterful use of mustard yellow. This rare and precious hue serves as a highlight and a trait d’union between the various colors, providing the design with extraordinary vitality and chromatic cohesion. The main border is the definitive “hallmark” of Chi Chi weaving: a complex, rigorous band featuring diagonal bars (often described as “biscuit” or “shell” motifs) alternating with rosettes and small geometric stars. This frame, combined with the multitude of tiny talismanic motifs, creates a visual rhythm of incredible richness and sophistication.

Condition: Excellent. The clarity of the design and the brilliance of the natural dyes have been meticulously preserved at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
