Rug Description

Tribal rug, Southern Persian tribal manufacture, circa 1890: a stylistic bridge between the Caucasus and Persia. An exceptional Afshari specimen that stands out for its rare design and structural integrity. This rug still retains its original soumak-style flat-woven finishes at the ends, a technical detail highly sought after by collectors, certifying its authentic nomadic origin. The composition is dominated by a deep midnight-blue field, featuring a rich, multicolored “all-over” decoration. The floral and geometric motifs, arranged with impeccable balance, reveal a clear Caucasian-inspired Perpedil influence, with stylized forms that echo the Azerbaijani ancestry of the Afshar tribe.

The chromatic palette is vibrant and luminous: warm red and ochre tones interact with ivory and light blue, creating a sharp contrast that enhances the clarity of the design. Despite the decorative density, the overall effect is harmonious and airy, avoiding the rigidity often found in other tribal artifacts—a testament to superior craftsmanship.
