Kilim Description

Bidjar Kilim manufacture, Western Persia: a fascinating synthesis of Kurdish vigor and the floral elegance of French Imperial rugs. This rare Bidjar Kilim is a masterful example of cultural syncretism in textile art. The artifact beautifully interprets the “Gol Farang” motif (literally “foreign flower” or “flower of France”), a style born from the fascination that the botanical decorations of Savonnerie and Aubusson rugs exerted on Persian weavers starting from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The composition unfolds across a vibrant coral red field, a warm and deep hue that grants the piece a luminous vitality. At its center lies an oblong medallion, a typical element of traditional Bidjar production, which in this version is reinterpreted and “filled” with sumptuous Western-style floral bouquets. The density of the design and the precision of the lines, despite the flat-weave technique, bear witness to the superior quality of the wool and the weaver’s skill.

The majestic borders frame the field with a rigor reminiscent of French Imperial carpets, creating a perfect balance between the structural solidity typical of Bidjar weavings and the decorative delicacy of the floral motif. A rare find on the market, it combines antique charm with a timeless decorative aesthetic.

Condition: Excellent. The wool retains its textural strength, and the natural pigments of the coral red and floral decorations are vivid and perfectly preserved. Held at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
