Kilim Description
Mazandaran Kilim, Northern Persia: the primordial meeting of sand and sea in textile minimalism. This extraordinary Kilim is a masterpiece of visual power and formal synthesis. The composition relies on the juxtaposition of just two dominant colors: a warm, textured mustard yellow, evoking the density of sand, and an intense blue that shifts through shimmering shades, mirroring the ripples of waves crashing on the shore. The design is structured by joining four panels woven on narrow looms in a mirror-image layout; these vertical seams are not merely functional but act as “meridians” that rhythmically divide the space, providing balance and an enveloping aesthetic.
Aesthetic and Technical Elements: Color in Mazandaran weaving is never static: the tonal variations (abrash) from natural hand-dyeing grant the blue an oceanic depth, making the surface vibrant and alive. The simplicity of the design highlights the quality of the hand-spun wool, which catches the light irregularly, creating a tactile effect that feels almost velvety despite the flat-weave structure. This Kilim does not seek to decorate; it aims to transform the environment, acting as a vast field of color that instills calm and contemplation.
Usage and Anthropological Character: Historically, artifacts of this size were rare and intended to cover large floor areas in the homes of affluent families in the Caspian region, or used as Soffreh (ceremonial rugs for bread or communal meals). Today, their role in interior design is revolutionary: they are pieces capable of holding their own in minimalist architecture, industrial lofts, or ultra-modern spaces. Their organic nature and imposing format make them ideal centerpieces for a living area, where the strength of the chromatic contrast can dialogue with raw materials like concrete, wood, or glass.
Condition: Superb. The tension of the joined panels is perfect, and the saturation of the natural dyes remains intact, meticulously preserved at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
Dimensions & Interior Design Advice: 375 × 267 cm. A monumental size for a Mazandaran, capable of defining and dignifying the largest spaces with a universal, timeless language.
