Rug Description

Antique Caucasian Ghenge rug, stylized boteh all over design, 1880 ca. A rare and very fine antique Caucasian Ghenge ( Gendje) carpet with an all-over boteh motif. The background of this wonderful Caucasian Ghenge carpet on a midnight blue background welcomes a constellation of small boteh motifs creating a truly astonishing graphic. The tufts of the small botehs in alternating positions, together with the expertly matched color contrasts, offer a rhythmic movement to the modular composition. The borders of this outstanding antique Caucasian Ghenge carpet are rich both from a graphic point of view and from that of chromatic interchange. The carnation borders such as those with oblique bars, the ivory ground one before the background and the last one in ocher, give this antique a special aura, giving further brightness to the carpet. The state of conservation of this antique Caucasian Ghenge carpet is excellent, carefully kept in the Mollaian Rugs collection.
