Rug Description
Antique Persian Bidjar rug, circa 1890: structural strength and decorative elegance. A rare and exemplary late 19th-century Bidjar, characterized by a “strong yet gentle” soul. Its wool warp structure, typical of older and more tribal productions, provides the rug with a rich feel and superior flexibility compared to standard Bidjar rugs on cotton. The composition is centered around a small, refined central medallion, surrounded by a dense and meticulous Herati motif that covers the entire field, creating a vibrant and deep texture.
The visual impact is made unique by a deliberate oblong effect, the result of a skillful architectural interplay between proportions and color. The contrast between the brick-red field and the sky-blue inner border elongates the central design, while the border system defines its character: the ivory-ground inner and outer borders provide light and airiness, while the midnight-blue main border anchors the entire composition with solemnity. The result is a rug of extreme harmony, capable of balancing the nearly architectural rigor of Bidjar design with a rare chromatic delicacy.
