Rug Description
Kashan Souf rug, Central Persia, Qajar Period: a textile bas-relief of unprecedented architectural and chromatic finesse. This is an artifact of exceptional rarity and collector value. This Kashan, crafted entirely in silk, employs the complex Souf technique to create a sculptural work of extraordinary three-dimensionality. The ground of the rug features a flat-weave in a luminous golden yellow, acting as a reflective stage for the relief decorations, which emerge with plastic vigor from the surface.
The central Mihrab field hosts the majestic Tree of Life, around which an incredibly realistic zoomorphic narrative unfolds. The beasts, including lions and tigers, are perfectly defined in their dynamic poses; their coats are rendered in a sophisticated straw yellow that contrasts chromatically with the background, providing a lifelike effect. The palette is enriched by shades of grey, brown, and ash blue, defining the birds and floral elements with surgical precision.
The decorative scheme continues with extreme coherence in the main border, which houses a dense succession of minutely executed zoomorphic and floral elements. A detail of great prestige is found in the side borders preceding the central field: declined in deep violet and purple tones, they are adorned with silver-grey motifs, creating a chromatic contrast that frames and ennobles the entire composition. A museum-quality artifact where Souf silk is transformed into pure plastic art.
Condition: Excellent. The three-dimensional structure is perfectly preserved, maintaining the interplay of light between the flat yellow ground and the multi-colored relief of the pile. Meticulously held at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
