Rug Description

Antique Chinese Silk&Metal Thread, 19^th Century.

In this imperial Chinese carpet, we find a decorative structure similar to the style of European tapestries of the 16th and 17th centuries. The first sensation when observing this carpet is that of being in front of a sculpture. All designs are embossed on a base woven with metallic threads. The main border is decorated with a “wan” or swastika motif representing the sun. The small purple border bears the pearl motif. The carpet’s background features “cloud” motifs, cherry trees and the phoenix, associated with paradise and royalty. The binding of the fringes is also very interesting.
