Rug Description

A Rare Pictorial Antique Persian Kashan Mohtasham Rug. 1890 ca. Hajji Mullah Mohammad Hassan Mohtasham was among the most prolific and refined master knotters of Kashan. The quality of the colours, the definition of the decorative motifs, the balance of the decorative motifs and their proportions make Kashan Mohtasham carpets true works of art, worthy of being exhibited in museums. In this extraordinary late 19th century Kashan Mothasham, we have the version in portraiture “painterly” style. Probably, the protagonist of the scene, surrounded by a delightful garden with flowering cherry trees full of fruit, should be a descendant of the Qajar dynasty, Naser al-Din Shah Qajar reigning from 1848 to 1896. His face and the decoration of her dress are well defined and detailed. The dress is filled with detailed boteh motifs. The right hand holds a small bowl, Kashkul, used by Sufi mystics for alms, while the left holds an axe, regally decorated. The shoes are very interesting, with a shaded effect and a curved toe. The background is surrounded by a very rich border, generating a truly intriguing three-dimensional effect. Soft and well-balanced colours, thanks to the fine light contrasts, enhance the meticulous decoration of this ancient Kashan Mohtasham carpet. Its state of conservation is excellent.
