Antique Chinese Signed Silk Rug with Metal XIX Century.
Chinese imperial carpets are those carpets made for the highest representatives of the state, for the emperor and as an embassy gift. These carpet productions, made exclusively in the imperial workshops, were produced from the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Imperial Chinese carpets are significantly few, there are just over 300 in the world. These carpets, in addition to the highest quality silk, were knotted with silver, copper or gold threads to further symbolize the emperor’s refinement and power. In this magnificent example, we find the motif of the dragon with 5 claws, as the supreme symbol combined with the figure of the emperor, son of heaven. Imperial Chinese carpets are attributable to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The background of the orange carpet is decorated with 5 dragons, symbolizing the order of the cosmos. Cloud motifs run along the borders, filled with traditional Chinese motifs. The two heads of the carpet are decorated with the “rainbow” motif which consists of parallel waving lines of various colors radiating from the bottom upwards the conjunction with the sacred mountain towards the background of the carpet.
