Rug Description

Antique Indian Silk Deccani Pictorial Hand-Knotted Rug 1900-1920.

A carpet with a pictorial scene attributable to the Hindu goddess Kali, recognizable by her 4 four arms. We are rarely aware of carpets coming from the Hindu tradition and this ancient Deccani silk carpet is very accurate in its graphic composition and very delicate in its color combinations. Kali reigns over the landscape below as ruler of time. Behind him, the darker colors of the night sky, the snow-capped mountains on a brown background, act as a preamble to the figure of the divinity exalted by a circle of light behind his head. The reproduction of the goddess Kali is magistrally elaborate and rich in detail, well balanced in terms of proportions and color combinations. The landscape below is a tribute to the presence of nature. Another important element is the resting cow, also considered sacred. Delicious, after all, are the small floral inserts in pure Indian decorative style. Considering its era, this wonderful silk Deccan carpet is in an excellent state of preservation.
