Rug Description

Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug, 1880-1900. A lively and elegant Caucasian Shirvan carpet with very strong and well-contrasted tones. The design of this ancient Shirvan carpet develops in a rather limited portion within the background on a bright red. Despite the small portion of the background, the graphic effect, obtained from the modularity of the five medallions, is surprisingly graceful. The particularity of the Caucasian Shirvan carpets surprises us for the great mastery in the development of compositional motifs. The border on a midnight blue background filled with star motifs in which the contrasts between red, ocher and ash blue are perfectly combined is very unusual and captivating. The more geometric stylization of the “eagle’s beak” motif on a yellow ocher background is very interesting, defining the aura of this ancient Shirvan carpet. The last border, in black, bears the stylized rosette motif in a colorful modulation of colours. The state of conservation of this antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet is excellent. Unusual design, with a strong character, this antique Shirvan carpet is ready to elegantly define any environment.
