Textile Description
Antique Textile with Symbolic Motifs
This striking antique textile showcases a highly symbolic design, woven with remarkable precision and rich in cultural meaning. The composition unfolds in horizontal registers, each carrying a unique set of motifs. At the upper section, stylized zoomorphic figures and crowned human portraits appear in framed panels, symbolizing status, ancestry, and guardianship. Below them, rows of elongated birds, likely representing prosperity, fertility, and continuity, form a rhythmic procession. The central band features larger anthropomorphic figures with outstretched arms, possibly evoking communal unity or ritual dances. Interwoven with these are fantastical animals, some resembling horses or mythical beasts, serving as protective symbols in traditional cosmology. The lower portion is dominated by monumental triangular and temple-like motifs, reminiscent of sacred architecture or ceremonial offerings, highlighting the textile’s ritual significance. Surrounding these, smaller abstract patterns and vegetal elements reinforce themes of fertility and cosmic balance. Executed in warm tones of saffron, ochre, and deep brown, this piece not only exemplifies the technical mastery of traditional ikat weaving but also carries layers of symbolic storytelling. It would have likely been used in ceremonial contexts, where each motif held specific spiritual or social significance. Explore our amazing collection of antique textiles.
