Textile Description
This exquisite pair of framed antique Chinese textiles represents a classic example of sleeve bands (shouxiu) from the late Qing Dynasty (19th to early 20th century). Originally, these long, narrow panels were hand-embroidered and sewn onto the cuffs of women’s informal silk robes. They were designed to be detachable, allowing them to be cleaned or transferred to different garments, while also serving as a display of the wearer’s social status and artistic taste. Crafted with vibrant silk threads on a silk ground, the embroidery features a rich array of auspicious motifs. The imagery includes delicate floral sprays, such as peonies and plum blossoms, interspersed with elegant birds and ritual vases. In Chinese iconography, the vase (ping) is a homophone for “peace,” making it a symbol of stability and harmony. The inclusion of birds often signifies a happy union or spiritual grace. The vertical composition creates a rhythmic, flowing narrative that highlights the technical precision of the needlework. Today, these bands are highly prized by collectors as “miniature masterpieces.” Framed as a diptych, they serve as sophisticated decorative art, preserving the refined elegance of traditional Chinese textile craftsmanship for a contemporary setting.
