Textile Description
Antique Textile Tibetan Thangka, 17th–18th Century, 116 × 61 cm
An exceptionally rare and spiritually significant artifact, this antique Tibetan Thangka dates back to the 17th century and measures 116 × 61 cm. Hand-painted on textile and bordered with fine silk brocade, this Thangka reflects centuries-old Himalayan Buddhist iconography, likely originating from a monastery or private altar in Tibet. The central composition features a seated lama or teacher, surrounded by attendant figures and guardian deities, all rendered in muted yet profoundly expressive mineral pigments. A delicate golden aureole encircles each sacred figure, and the central deity is seated on a lotus throne, a recurring symbol of enlightenment and transcendence. The Thangka is framed with original handwoven silk brocade in tones of indigo, gold, crimson, and yellow, adorned with auspicious motifs such as lotus flowers and sacred emblems, preserving the spiritual and artistic integrity of the piece. The aged patina, minor abrasions, and faded areas speak to its authentic age and devotional use. These sacred scroll paintings were traditionally used for meditation, rituals, and teaching in Tibetan Buddhism, and were often rolled and transported by monks or pilgrims. Thangkas from this early period are exceedingly scarce, particularly those with intact silk borders and original hanging rod. Explore our amazing collection of antique chinese textiles.
