Rug Description

This authentic antique Tibetan saddle rug is a rare piece from the late 19th or early 20th century, representing the pinnacle of Himalayan equestrian culture. Hand-knotted with high-quality wool on a sturdy cotton foundation, this 131 x 65 cm piece served as a “Tekheb,” or decorative top cover, designed to protect and adorn horses, the primary mode of transport in the isolated Tibetan highlands. What makes this piece truly special is its remarkably preserved iconography; the central medallions feature vibrant floral motifs symbolizing purity, framed by intricate borders of “geometric clouds” and auspicious symbols that reflect deep Buddhist and Taoist influences. Its condition is good for its age, with minor edge stabilization that preserves the integrity of its traditional vegetable dyes, which remain vivid after over a century. For a collector, its value lies in its status as a “pure” artifact, as Tibetan saddle rugs are among the few weaving traditions that remained largely uninfluenced by Western commercial demands. You should note the distinctive notched “butterfly” shape, designed to fit securely over a wooden saddle.
