Rug Description

Five-Dragon Imperial Silk and Metal Chinese Rug. 19 th century. The Qing dynasty, which began in 1644 and ended in 1911, lasted 268 years, in which carpets also played a decisive role in the growth and consolidation of the Chinese kingdom. In this very rare imperial Chinese carpet in metallic threads and silk, we find the foundations on which traditional and imperial Chinese culture is based. Symbolism permeates Chinese spiritual life, representing the moral pillars on which the empire is founded. The 5-clawed dragon motif is the undisputed protagonist of this ancient imperial Chinese carpet. The dragon motif symbolizes the Emperor, the power of nature and the universe, set in relief on the bottom in metal threads. The dragon faces like the rest of the figures are extremely defined, as their strenght gaze. The five dragons guard the motifs of the flamed pearl, a symbol of perfection in a splendid coral red colour. The border follows one another across the entire surface, veering towards the inside with the rainbow border motif, meticulously composed on all four sides. The state of conservation of this ancient imperial Chinese carpet is excellent, the colors are decidedly well preserved, which also indicates impeccable care of the carpet over the course of two centuries. Museum quality!
