Rug Description
Antique Caucasian Zeiwa / Zeiva) carpet. XIX century. A very rare carpet, this antique Zeiwa (Zeiva) carpet, in large format. The use of some precious colours such as yellow and the size, decidedly larger than other carpets of the same type, suggest that this antique Zeiwa carpet was made to celebrate an important occasion. The design, develops over the entire surface with the modular “Eagle” motif as we can sometimes find in the so-called Chelaberd carpets. These modular compositions, could also represent cruciform shields with hooked rays. The composition of the design is very accurate allowing us to read the definition of the carpet with extreme ease. The borders, in intense yellow, are perfectly balanced and in harmony with the contrasts present in the background emphasized by the contrasts with the “electric” blue present in the smaller borders and in the profiles of the designs of the background. The state of conservation of this Kuba (Quba) carpet is exceptional.
At Mollaian srl we try to do our best, giving a new life to some of antique rugs with minor problems, that may have affected by age. So, apart from what is visible on the presented photos, it should be noted that the rugs are professionally cleaned, and where necessary, the Selvages/Sides and Ends/Fringes have been secured. Upon request, we can provide a complete condition report (including any retouch performed by our restoration team), if it is not already presented down below.
