Rug Description

This rare and captivating Israeli antique rug, woven around 1940, presents a unique fusion of Middle Eastern symbolism and modernist color sensibility, likely crafted during the British Mandate period or early statehood. Its design draws inspiration from prayer rugs (mihrab format) but incorporates a distinctly artistic interpretation of floral motifs. At the center, a large floral bouquet emerges from a lavender-purple ground, enclosed within a stepped mihrab arch—a sacred form traditionally symbolizing the direction of prayer. Above it, eight-pointed stars shine within the arch, adding a celestial element. The upper and lower sections of the field transition into soft gold and honey-toned panels, punctuated by small geometric rosettes and cross-like motifs. The multi-layered border features repeating abstract medallions, wave-like meanders, and stylized palmettes in shades of ivory, lilac, warm taupe, and mustard yellow, all woven in soft, subtly faded natural dyes.
