Rug Description
Antique Afghan Herat Rug “Green Field” – Kelleh Format. 19th Century
Museum-grade rarity from Herat manufacture: a paradisiacal garden on a legendary emerald-green ground. This exceptional rug is a pinnacle of antique Herat craftsmanship. Its most defining feature is the green field, a chromatic choice of extreme rarity in antique Afghan weaving, symbolizing sanctity and life. Its monumental Kelleh format points to a high-prestige commission, originally intended for grand aristocratic halls.
The composition stands out for its masterful balance: the central medallion is beautifully proportioned, seamlessly integrating into the field. It is framed and protected by sophisticated ash-blue cartouches, which define its perimeter with subtle chromatic elegance. The airy and vibrant field hosts a scholarly iconography: elegant floral vases—one symbolically guarded by two heraldic lions—alternate with stylized birds and distinct filler motifs that appear to float within the deep green ground.
The dense and minutely defined borders act as a precious frame for this ideal garden, creating a tight contrast that enhances the luminosity of the central scene. An artifact blending Afghan tradition with a rare aesthetic sensitivity, making it an art investment of timeless value.
Condition: Excellent for its age. The pile retains its textural strength, and the saturation of the rare green ground remains vivid. Held at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery.
Dimensions: 508 × 223 cm. A piece of unparalleled
