Rug Description

This beautifully preserved Afghan rug Bashir, measuring 270 × 133 cm, is a superb example of late 19th to early 20th-century weaving from the Herat region of northwestern Afghanistan, an area long celebrated for its rich weaving heritage and stylistic blend of Persian influence and tribal geometry. The rug’s deep terracotta red field is filled with an intricate, rhythmic arrangement of geometric floral motifs and tree-like forms, arranged in a highly structured, vertically mirrored format. These angular botanical figures evoke both natural symbolism and tribal identity, giving the rug a bold and grounded presence. The composition is framed by a series of borders, including a main border with octagonal medallions alternating in shades of indigo, ivory, and rust, flanked by finer guard bands with delicate rosette and diamond motifs. The interplay of warm earthy tones with deep blue accents adds dimension and vibrancy to the piece. This rug has interesting influence and lovely design from our collection.
