Rug Description
Mahal Rug Ziegler & Co. Manufacture, Mahal area: an icon of sober elegance and chromatic rarity. This extraordinary Mahal Ziegler is a sublime example of the production that revolutionized the luxury rug market at the end of the 19th century. Ziegler & Co. established its workshops in Sultanabad (modern-day Arak), selecting the finest Mahal weavers to create artifacts tailored to sophisticated Western tastes: spacious designs, premium wools, and harmonious palettes. This piece is distinguished by a very rare ivory field, a chromatic choice that grants the rug extraordinary luminosity and timeless modernity.
The “all-over” design features the Harshang motif (flaming palmette or crab design), reinterpreted with a spaciousness that allows each botanical element to “breathe” against the light background. The geometric rigor of the floral motifs blends with soft lines, achieving perfect visual balance. Framing this luminous expanse is a majestic rust-colored border; this warm, earthy tone acts as the ideal chromatic counterpoint, providing solidity and character without compromising the rug’s signature sobriety.
Historical Value & Format: The dimensions of 308 × 300 cm are exceptionally rare. The nearly square format is highly coveted in international interior design, as it allows for the furnishing of large living or dining areas with impeccable architectural symmetry. It is an investment in beauty and history, capable of harmonizing with both classical and contemporary interiors.
Condition: Excellent. The wool retains its original softness, and the passage of time has graced the vegetable dyes with a warm, noble patina. Held at the Mollaian Rugs Gallery
