Rug Description

Antique blue field Caucasian Shirvan rug. Ca 1900. A rare Caucasian Shirvan carpet with a blue background and an ivory background frame with a pronounced width compared to other more oblong rectangular carpets. The large main border not only frames and defines the surface of the background, but thanks to the contrast, it enhances the connecting lines of the harshang motif (also called crab motif) well modulated and assorted with delicate “pastel” colors. The background of this antique Shirvan carpet contains a decoration with a very decisive and disruptive character becoming the true protagonist of the scene. Two important medallions recall the dragon motifs present in the Caucasian Sumakh flat carpets. The colors of terracotta and ash blue emerge. The rest of the background of this antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet is embellished with robust hashang motifs surrounded by star and rosette motifs, typical of the repertoire and textile culture of the Azeri area. The state of conservation of this antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet is excellent, ready to define a new area of ✓✓a room or hang on the wall.
