This monumental antique Chinese Ningxia rug is a rare masterpiece, measuring an impressive 440 × 381 cm. Woven in the late Qing dynasty or early Republican era, the design features five powerful imperial dragons in pursuit of the flaming pearl, symbolizing wisdom, prosperity, and cosmic energy. Set against a soft golden-yellow field—reserved for the emperor—the dragons soar among stylized clouds, creating a celestial atmosphere. The lower part of the rug is framed with oceanic waves and sacred mountains, referencing the mythical origins of the dragons. Deep indigo and cobalt blues highlight the details, while the border is adorned with a bold Greek key motif for grounding and protection. Rugs of this scale and symbolism were typically commissioned for imperial palaces, temples, or important ceremonial halls.
