Rug Description
Antique Caucasian Saddle-Bag Kilim Rug, 1900 ca. The travel bags used during migrations, movements or during transhumance, have always been produced not only for their use, but also to be recognized by the populations encountered during their journey. These carpets represent a sort of passport of the carpet and its ethnic origin. In this double khorjin bag made using the Sumakh technique (flat weaving achieved by winding the weft on a group of warps). The main borders bear the “birth symbol”, a diamond with two curved arms at each end. The center of the carpet is dominated by an important double hooked cruciform medallion in alternating colour. These types of artefacts are today coveted collector’s items, capable of telling us about the habits and customs of the populations who wove them in the various territories of Iran, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
