Rug Description

A Rare Antique Persian Kashan Mohtasham Rug, 1880-1900. A wonderful carpet of excellent quality guaranteed by the very famous atelier of the master Hajji Mullah Mohammad Hassan Mohtasham in “pocket” format. A rare gem, probably made as a “sample” to create others with the same proportions but with decidedly larger formats. Despite its small size, this antique Kashan Mohtasham carpet has an important central medallion as the protagonist on a natural wool background. The medallion, in brick red, is lightened by the floral decorations elegantly arranged inside. The counter edges filled in sage green are very interesting, highlighted with red profiles that accompany the gaze towards the pale blue pendants. Sinuous floral compositions extend across the background in virtuous combinations of colors and shades. The main border, slightly wider than the lateral ones on an ivory base, sets the background with an outstanding balance thanks to the contrast of the midnight blue with the light and curved decoration that runs around the entire perimeter. The knotting of this Kashan Mohtasham is very fine and its state of conservation is truly excellent.
