Rug Description

Antique Persian Kashan Manchester Carpet, 1900 ca. The influence of the West on carpet production in the East is well known and documented since the mid-17th century. Carpets have always played a very important role both in “home” production and in manufactures more specifically aimed at European and American buyers. In the early of the 20th century, we witness the birth of decorative patterns, developed on graph paper, and the dedicated production of Persian carpets, with a decorative style more suitable for the international market. The designs of these carpets will generally be without medallions and, as for this Kashan Manchester carpet, we can appreciate the syncretism between traditional motifs and new decorative styles, decidedly lighter than the “classic” Persian carpets made in that period. The Manchester wools were spun in England and the pink background color was obtained through a particular mordanting, where a yogurt-based drink, dugh, was also used to tone down the bright red that was obtained using the madder root. The full-field design of this antique Kashan Manchester is made up of small vines and bunches of flowers arranged leaving space for the background, offering a decidedly relaxing view. The border, on a midnight blue background, dominated by small bouquets and floral motifs, is set between two smaller borders that are particularly suggestive for the graphic compositions on the small cartouches that frame the entire carpet. The state of conservation of this antique Kashan Manchester carpet is excellent, the soft wools are further embellished by their incredible brightness.
